Superpowers Series: Marvellous Maddie

Saturday 1st December

The world is full of superheroes. In everything we see and do, there is some hero behind it! We want to share these heroes’ stories. To let everybody see the superpowers that go into making the world a better place, and how they use their creativity to save the world.

Today’s superhero is the Marvellous Maddie Salters, award-winning journalist and young entrepreneur, who uses her creative superpowers to make the world a better place – finding the issues and stories that truly matter!

What is your superpower?

I can find the story in anyone.

What or who inspired your superpower?

You do! People do. It’s always amazing to just sit and talk to someone. People are always under this bizarre impression that they’re unremarkable – it just isn’t true! Everyone is unique and has their own personal narratives of triumph, of trial-and-error, of funny and extraordinary moments that all came together to make them a complex and vibrant human being.
Being an investigative journalist, a public speaker, and an essayist on social equity, it’s important to really listen to what people are saying and to support their voice the way they’d like it to be represented. As a creative writer and storyteller, it’s important to remember that often the most relatable details turn out to be the most mundane!
Harry Potter might be a boy wizard who saves the world – but we Muggles relate to the fact that he can’t comb his hair straight, breaks his glasses, and often feels out of the loop!

What has been one of your best inventions/creations?

Tech-wise, I was really proud of my project “PhotoSynthesis”. The concept, which I formulated over some months with a team I hand-picked, figured out a sustainable, green-tech method for printing photos – right from your phone case. It recycled some really old photography ideas I’d learned in the dark room in high school (and through years of playing with film and photo-sensitive papers) with modern tech like Bluetooth, WiFi, and solar energy to figure out a way to use old plastics to print beautiful photos that were less prone to sun damage. In this day and age, we are taking more photos than ever but printing less than ever. My team and I came up with a viable way to not only make photography tangible again, but to fight waste while we did so. I was honoured to win the UCL Provost’s Prize, SOAS’ Entrepreneur of the Year, and to be a Santander Entrepreneurial finalist.

How has technology changed what you do and influenced your life?

Technology allows me to work globally! I can teach a storytelling class in Tel Aviv from New York City, I can write-up a city guide to Osaka for a company in London while I’m in Paris. The options are endless. Technology has allowed me to interface with companies all over the world, allowing me as a writer the freedom to work remotely and travel to interesting places.

Online calendars keep me alerted for meetings despite time-zone changes. Video platforms allow me to take meetings with people all over the world at once. I am able to save interviews that I conduct into the Cloud as voice files and download them to different devices. Uploading platforms allow me to submit stories to publications worldwide. And as an editor, these same platforms allow me to review submissions from anywhere in the world. Technology has allowed for instantaneous communication which gives me the freedom to do what I need to, anywhere that I am.

What is your favourite Tech Will Save Us kit and why?

I love the Music Star Pack, with the Speaker Kit + Synth Kit! It’s something I’d want to play with. It bridges the gap between creativity and technology, and is a really fun way to learn engineering, science, and music all at once. Plus, how cool do all of the elements look? You’re never the wrong age to do some soldering!

“Tech Will Save Us” – agree or disagree?
