Superpowers Series: Revolutionary Rehana

The world is full of superheroes. In everything we see and do, there is some hero behind it! We want to share these heroes’ stories and let everybody see the superpowers that go into making the world a better place – and how they use technology to save the world.

Today we spoke to the Revolutionary Rehana who told us about her creative superpowers: combining technology and fashion to create awesome wearable tech!

What is your superpower?

Wearable technology

What or who inspired your superpower?

In my work, I have been inspired by a couple of individuals who I view as my role models, including Helen Leigh, Ross Atkin and Hadeel Ayoub. They all work in different fields (including educational technology, robotics and assistive technology) and do so with incredible passion. Their dedication, confidence and a whole lot of ‘thinking outside the box’ has inspired me to be creative and innovative in what I do, by combining my knowledge and the skills that I learnt to create amazing work and projects.

What has been one of your best inventions/creations?

One of my best inventions is also one of my first ones, where I made a small art piece of three shooting stars. I 3D printed the stars, embroidered the trail of the stars, and used conductive thread to make a sewable circuit that powered a couple of yellow LEDs I stitched inside each star.

It is a simple piece of work, using simple skills that anyone could learn, but I figured out I can do more with it. And this is where my current work comes in, as I’m currently working at an assistive tech start-up, where Hadeel has developed a smart glove that translates sign language into speech and text for speech-impaired individuals. We wanted the gloves to be fashionable rather than stand out as an aid, so I’m using the same combination of 3D printing techniques on fabric, embroidery and conductive fabrics to create gloves for children and adults. For example, the glove I’m wearing in the picture below is the first prototype we made for a speech-impaired bride who wanted to say her own vows!

How has technology changed what you do and influenced your life?

I have been very lucky to witness the time where we had no phones, to now, where we are so dependent on them! For me, that means that technology will always be around us, to create things that will help us in our daily lives. I find it such an incredibly fascinating field, that I have chosen to work in tech and do all these amazing projects with even more amazing people. Can you imagine that the projects I am doing now where not even possible to do 10 years ago because we didn’t have the technology for it? New technologies will continue to be developed in the future, meaning that we’ll soon be doing more exciting projects that we haven’t thought of, seen or heard about yet!

What is your favourite Tech Will Save Us kit and why?

I would choose the Sew + Glow Kit, because it introduces sewable circuits in a fun and easy way. Also, the possibilities with sewable circuits are endless! I would use it to combine simple embroidery stitches and conductive thread to create fun electronic embroidery. There are so many different things you can do with tech, you just need to be creative and inventive!

“Tech Will Save Us” – agree or disagree?

I couldn’t agree more! Amazing, life-changing technologies are being developed at the moment, like robots that assist surgeons in surgeries, or smart wristbands that measure blood pressure for those who are at risk for heart attacks. In this sense, technology will save our lives!
