The Women of Tech Will Save Us: Irene

Tuesday 8th March

Who are you?

What do you do at Tech Will Save Us?

Customer Support and Wellness Captain

Why do you love technology?

Because since the dawn of humanity, Homo Sapiens has been creating and perfecting technology. From a stick in a termite mound to ISS we’ve found ways to change the world around us and share that with others.

What’s your favourite piece of tech?

My LED light up shoes. They really make the party.

Which woman inspired you most to get into your field?

It’s hard to pick out just one single woman as we stand on the shoulders of giants. My Mum was a Science teacher who did a law degree whilst raising 4 young daughters so her attitude was that you can do it. But also Hedy Lamarr who bridged Acting and Computing, Mary Anderson who gave us windscreen wipers, and the great Dorothy Arzner of Hollywood’s Golden Age who paved the way and created many filming techniques including the boom microphone.

If you could have a beer with any other woman in tech who would it be?

Probably Dr Helen Sharman who was the first Briton in Space. (Dr Helen Patricia Sharman OBE FRSC is a British chemist who became the first Briton in space and the first woman to visit the Mir space station in 1991. Sharman was born in Grenoside, Sheffield, later moving to Greenhill.)

Any words for aspiring tech stars?

Read everything. Not just science but fiction too. You can never have too much knowledge.
